As the country continues to rely heavily on imports for its livestock consumption, plans are underway to revive the Zuguru cattle ranch in the lower LLG of Bena in the Unggai-Bena district of the Eastern Highlands province.

This follows a visit by Secretary of the Department of Agriculture and Livestock (DAL) Daniel Kombuk last week.

During the visit, Mr. Kombuk said that under the leadership of Prime Minister James Marape, DAL is working to realize the government’s visions in agriculture and one of the areas is cattle breeding.

“Prime Minister James Marape has written a letter asking DAL to revive cattle ranching in the country,” Kombuk said.

“There are a total of 8 cattle ranches in the country and one of them is Zuguru Cattle Ranch. “

“Cattle farms are running out in the Markham Valley, so the priority now is to revive the industry by providing the necessary support the farms need. “

“In this exercise, all state agencies involved in agriculture must work together in partnership to revive all beef farms.

Mr. Kombuk then presented a brand new Toyota land cruiser to Zuguru farm manager Bobby Sogavo to carry out his operations.

Mr. Kombuk also thanked the Coffee Industry Corporation (CIC) operating in the province for their help in terms of upgrading the farm infrastructure.

It was reported that CIC helped build a storage shed, tuff tanks, and also house maintenance.

“The ranch had been run down for a few years, but it’s now back to where it should be thanks to CIC for infrastructure,” he added.

Representing the Eastern Highlands Provincial Administration, Deputy Administrator Ipa’e Maniha said they are ready to support DAL in rebuilding the livestock farm.

“The priority of our provincial governments is agricultural trade and investment, and cattle ranching falls under this goal,” said Mr. Maniha.

“One way to take over PNG is through agriculture and that’s the way to go. The provincial government has therefore set aside K 250,000 for raising cattle. “
